Daily puzzle · Hard · Topographic map
Today's map traced a loose arc across the old edges of empire and trade, from water to mountain. Istanbul, split by the Bosphorus between two continents, once anchored the trade routes that Kyiv's merchants along the Dnieper helped feed into the Byzantine world, while Stockholm's island-scattered harbor grew rich on Baltic commerce of the same medieval era. Farther east and later in history, Almaty rose beneath the Tian Shan as a Silk Road-adjacent outpost turned Soviet showcase city, echoing the imperial reach that also touched Podgorica, a small Adriatic-facing capital shaped by Venetian, Ottoman, and Yugoslav rule alike. Together the five cities sketch how rivers, seas, and mountain ranges have long guided where power and people settled.
