None of these capitals grew up naturally — each was planned and built to govern. Washington, D.C. was laid out on the Potomac as a compromise capital; Canberra was designed to settle Sydney vs. Melbourne; Brasília rose from the empty interior in the 1950s; Astana became Kazakhstan's showcase capital in 1997; and Naypyidaw was carved out of Myanmar's countryside in 2005.
