Theme: Cities Built on the Salt Trade
Long before refrigeration, salt was worth its weight in gold, and whole cities rose to mine, refine, or trade it. Salzburg's very name means 'Salt Castle,' its fortune built on nearby mines. Timbuktu grew rich as caravans hauled slabs of Saharan salt across the desert to trade for gold. Wieliczka and Salins-les-Bains both grew around Europe's oldest salt works, while Solikamsk anchored Russia's salt industry deep in the Urals.
