Theme: Cities Born from Roman Legionary Fortresses
Long before they became modern capitals and university towns, these five cities began as fortified camps for Rome's legions guarding the empire's frontiers. Vindobona on the Danube grew into Vienna, while Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium on the Rhine became Cologne. Argentoratum guarded the same river further south and is now Strasbourg, and in Britain the legions built Eboracum and Deva Victrix, which endure today as York and Chester.
