Today's flags spanned very different design traditions, from Mexico's central coat of arms depicting an eagle devouring a serpent atop a cactus, a scene drawn from Aztec founding legend, to Libya's current flag, adopted in 2011 and reviving the tricolor used briefly after independence before Gaddafi's plain green banner took over. Laos and Barbados each center a single bold emblem, a white disc symbolizing the moon over the Mekong for Laos, and a broken trident marking Barbados's split from colonial rule for the other. Grenada rounds things out with its own quiet symbolism, a nutmeg pod stitched into the design, a nod to the spice that shaped the island's economy.
