Some capitals were deliberately relocated away from vulnerable coastlines or contested borders to safer, more central ground. Abuja replaced Lagos in 1991 to sit at Nigeria's ethnic and geographic heart, while Islamabad was purpose-built in the 1960s to move Pakistan's seat of government away from coastal Karachi. Naypyidaw was carved from scrubland in 2005, far inland from Yangon's harbor, and Astana was chosen in 1997 to shift Kazakhstan's center north into the steppe. Yamoussoukro, deep in Ivory Coast's interior, became the official capital in 1983, away from the port city of Abidjan.
