Theme: Otherworldly Canyons Carved by Wind and Water
These five gashes in the earth show how patient erosion can sculpt stone into something almost unbelievable. Vikos Gorge in Greece holds the record as one of the world's deepest canyons relative to its width, while Kazakhstan's Charyn Canyon is nicknamed the 'Valley of Castles' for its wind-carved spires. Sesriem Canyon slices through Namibia's red desert near the dunes of Sossusvlei, and Taroko Gorge in Taiwan cuts through marble cliffs draped in subtropical forest. Peru's Colca Canyon, twice the depth of the Grand Canyon, remains home to soaring Andean condors.
