Theme: Volcanoes That Reshaped Their Landscape in Living Memory

Each of these volcanoes erupted within the last century and a half, permanently altering the land and sky around them. Mount St. Helens lost over 1,300 feet of elevation in its 1980 lateral blast, while Pinatubo's 1991 eruption cooled global temperatures for two years. Chaitén stunned volcanologists in 2008 by erupting after nearly 9,000 years of silence, and Eyjafjallajökull grounded European air travel in 2010 despite its modest size. Nyiragongo's lava lake has repeatedly sent rivers of molten rock toward Goma, most recently in 2021.
