Theme: Capitals Relocated to Planned New Cities
Each of these capitals was deliberately built from scratch (or largely so) to replace an older seat of government. Islamabad took over from Karachi in 1960 as Pakistan's purpose-built capital, while Canberra was carved out of the Australian bush in 1913 to settle a rivalry between Sydney and Melbourne. Brasília rose from empty plateau in 1960 to pull Brazil's development inland, Dodoma was designated Tanzania's capital in 1973 to sit more centrally than Dar es Salaam, and Putrajaya was raised in the 1990s as Malaysia's new administrative capital south of Kuala Lumpur.
