Theme: Capitals of Ancient Empires
Each city was once the heart of a great empire. Rome ruled the Mediterranean world; Athens led the classical Greek city-states; and Istanbul — as Constantinople — was capital to both the Byzantine and Ottoman empires. Farther afield, Xi'an anchored a string of Chinese dynasties (its Terracotta Army guards a First Emperor), and Cusco was the capital of the Inca.
