Each of today's cities once served as a national capital and later lost the title. Rio de Janeiro ran Brazil until purpose-built Brasília took over in 1960; Philadelphia was the young United States' capital in the 1790s; St. Petersburg led Russia until 1918; Kyoto was Japan's imperial capital until 1868; and Almaty was Kazakhstan's capital until it moved to Astana in 1997.
