Each city is a port on the Amazon or its great tributaries. Manaus is the jungle metropolis deep in Brazil, Belém guards the river's mouth on the Atlantic, and Santarém sits at the meeting of the Amazon and Tapajós. Far upstream, Iquitos in Peru is reachable only by river or air, and Leticia marks the point where Colombia, Peru and Brazil meet.
