Follow the Rhine from the Alps to the North Sea and you pass all five. Cologne is the great cathedral city of the German Rhineland, Düsseldorf its stylish neighbour downstream, and Bonn the former West German capital just to the south. Basel sits where the river turns north out of Switzerland, and Strasbourg — technically on a Rhine tributary at the French-German border — anchors the whole corridor.
