Each city lies high in the Arctic or near it. Reykjavík is the world's northernmost capital, Tromsø a Norwegian gateway to the Arctic, and Murmansk a large Russian port kept ice-free by the Gulf Stream. Nuuk is the small capital of Greenland, and Longyearbyen on Svalbard is about as far north as any town on Earth.
