Theme: Cradles of the Renaissance
Each Italian city helped ignite the Renaissance. Florence was its birthplace under the Medici, and Milan flourished under the Sforza dukes and Leonardo da Vinci. Siena's Gothic beauty rivalled Florence's, while the small courts of Mantua and Urbino — Raphael's birthplace — became jewels of art and learning out of all proportion to their size.
