Theme: Cities of the Silk Road
Each city was a great caravan halt on the old Silk Road. Samarkand and Bukhara are the jewels of Uzbekistan, their tiled domes famous across Central Asia, and Tashkent the region's largest modern city. Kashgar was the western oasis of China's deserts, and Herat, in western Afghanistan, guarded the route toward Persia.
