Theme: Cities Straddling the Equator
These five cities all sit almost exactly on the equator, the imaginary line splitting Earth into northern and southern hemispheres. Quito's nearby Mitad del Mundo monument marks Ecuador's claim to equatorial fame, while Macapá in Brazil built a stadium, Zerão, with the line running through its center field. Pontianak in Indonesian Borneo and Nanyuki in Kenya both host equator markers popular with tourists, and Mbandaka, deep in the Congo rainforest, quietly sits on the same line with far less fanfare.
