Theme: Towns Split by an International Border
Some towns never got the memo that a border was supposed to divide them. Görlitz shares its Art Nouveau streets with Zgorzelec across the Neisse, while Baarle-Hertog's Belgian and Dutch plots are so tangled that house numbers indicate nationality. Tornio and its Swedish twin Haparanda even share a golf course that straddles the frontier, and little Valga and Valka, split after 1920, still function almost as one town across the Estonia-Latvia line. Komárno completes the set, its Danube bridge linking it to Hungarian Komárom in a single historic fortress town cut in two.
