Theme: Stilt Villages Built Over Water

Long before modern engineering, communities around the world built entire villages on stilts above lakes, lagoons, and tidal flats. Peru's Uros people weave floating reed islands on Lake Titicaca, while Brunei's Kampong Ayer has housed river-dwellers for over a thousand years. In Benin, Ganvié was founded by people fleeing slave raiders who knew their pursuers would not follow onto water, and in Hong Kong, Tai O's stilt houses still shelter fishing families. Lagos's Makoko shows this tradition continuing today, a dense stilt settlement rising above the lagoon in one of Africa's biggest cities.
