Theme: Cities Founded (or Renamed) by Alexander the Great
Alexander the Great scattered new cities across his empire, many bearing his own name. Alexandria in Egypt became the greatest of them, a Mediterranean hub of learning and trade. Kandahar's very name is believed to derive from 'Iskandar,' the Persian rendering of Alexander, while Herat was long identified with his Alexandria Areion. Further east, Khujand in Tajikistan marked the empire's edge as Alexandria Eschate, and Bagram in Afghanistan sits atop the ruins of Alexandria ad Caucasum.
