Theme: Cities Rebuilt After Devastating Earthquakes
Each of these cities was leveled by a catastrophic earthquake, then rose again with a new urban plan. Lisbon's 1755 quake led to Europe's first grid-planned reconstruction under the Marquis of Pombal, while San Francisco rebuilt swiftly after 1906 to host a World's Fair less than a decade later. Tokyo's 1923 Great Kanto earthquake reshaped its modern layout, and Skopje's 1963 disaster made it a symbol of international solidarity rebuilding. Managua, devastated in 1972, still bears the scars of that quake in its sparse, low-rise downtown.
