Theme: Cities With the World's Oldest Underground Railways
The race to move people beneath city streets began in London in 1863 with the world's first underground railway, the Metropolitan Line. Budapest followed in 1896 with the first electric underground on mainland Europe, while Glasgow's subway opened the same year as a compact cable-hauled loop. Boston's Tremont Street Subway of 1897 became the first underground transit system in North America, and Paris joined the club in 1900 in time for its World's Fair. Together these five cities pioneered the tunnels that would define modern urban life.
