Theme: Whole Towns That Physically Relocated
Some towns have had to move entirely, brick by brick, to survive. Kiruna, Sweden is shifting its town center eastward as the iron mine beneath it keeps growing, while Fengjie, China rose again on higher ground after the Three Gorges Dam flooded the Yangtze valley below. In Egypt, architect Hassan Fathy built New Gourna to resettle villagers whose homes sat atop the ancient Theban Necropolis, and in Australia, Adaminaby was rebuilt uphill when the Snowy Mountains Scheme flooded its valley. Furthest north, the Alaskan village of Chenega was reborn at a new site after the 1964 earthquake and tsunami swept away the original town.
