Germany's black-red-gold tricolor dates back to the 1848 revolutions, later becoming the settled symbol of a unified, democratic state, while Ghana's red-gold-green bears a black star honoring Kwame Nkrumah's vision of African independence, a design copied by several nations that followed its lead in the 1950s and 60s. Tajikistan's flag, with its crown and arc of seven stars, reflects Persian and Central Asian heritage distinct from its Turkic neighbors, and Haiti's blue and red, torn from the French tricolor with white removed, commemorates the 1804 revolution that made it the first Black-led republic. Saint Vincent and the Grenadines rounds things out with its three green diamonds arranged like a "V," a subtler bit of national branding from the Caribbean's smaller flags.
