Theme: Islands Born from Volcanic Explosions
Each of these islands owes its very shape to catastrophic volcanic violence. Krakatoa's 1883 eruption obliterated most of the original island and later grew Anak Krakatoa from the caldera floor. Santorini's crescent form comes from a Bronze Age eruption that may have inspired the Atlantis legend, while Surtsey rose from the sea off Iceland in 1963 in front of watching scientists. Deception Island in Antarctica still has a flooded caldera you can sail a ship into.
